Technical Deep-Dive: What Lies Behind Ready Designations

The term “ready” has no uniform definition in the maritime industry. Depending on the yard, classification society and buyer, it can mean very different things – from a simple space reservation in the engine room to a fully prepared fuel line that only needs to be connected. This makes careful technical analysis indispensable.

For methanol-ready newbuilds, a substantive preparation typically covers the following elements: double-walled tank spaces constructed from stainless steel or coated carbon steel, pre-fabricated pipe penetrations through bulkheads, reserved areas for the fuel preparation unit, electrical pre-wiring for control and monitoring systems, and safety zones in accordance with the IGF Code that have already been integrated into the general arrangement. In some cases, the main engine is even installed as a dual-fuel variant, although the vessel initially operates on conventional heavy fuel oil (HFO) or very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) only.

For ammonia-ready vessels, the complexity is significantly greater. Ammonia is toxic, corrosive to copper alloys and requires its own safety framework that goes beyond the IGF Code. Preparations must therefore also address ventilation systems for the engine room, gas detection with redundant sensors, emergency shutdown systems and escape routes that meet the particular requirements of a toxic fuel. Materials that function without issue in conventional systems – such as copper-nickel alloys in cooling water systems – can fail upon contact with ammonia.

A frequently underestimated aspect is classification. A genuine ready preparation should ideally be documented by a classification society in the form of an additional notation – such as DNV’s “Gas fuelled” or Lloyd’s “Dual Fuel Ready” notation. Without such independent confirmation, the ready designation remains a pure yard claim that may not deliver the expected advantage during a later conversion.

In practice, there is also an economic dimension: the additional cost of a substantive ready preparation lies between 3% and 8% of the newbuild price, depending on the vessel type and scope. This sounds moderate but can quickly amount to several million dollars for a 15,000 TEU container vessel. The decisive question is whether this investment genuinely reduces the later conversion effort significantly – or whether it merely constitutes a comfort label for the second-hand market.

Practical Implications for Operators and Owners

For operators, the distinction between substantive preparation and a marketing label carries direct consequences. Anyone acquiring or ordering a vessel with a ready designation must know which specific works will still be required during a later conversion – and how long these will take.

A well-prepared methanol-ready vessel can ideally be converted within a single yard stay of 30 to 45 days. The main works are then limited to installing the fuel preparation unit, connecting pre-prepared lines, software updates for the engine control system and commissioning with test runs. For a poorly prepared vessel that merely has space reservations, the same conversion can take three to six months and prove considerably more expensive.

New dynamics are also emerging in the charter market. Charterers with their own decarbonisation targets increasingly favour tonnage that is demonstrably convertible. A class-approved ready status can directly affect charter rates – but only when the documentation is transparent and verifiable.

In the second-hand market, the ready designation plays a growing role in valuations. Ship brokers report that buyers of second-hand tonnage increasingly ask about the technical specifications of the ready preparation – not just the label itself. This shifts the information requirement from marketing towards technical due diligence.

Market Context: Ready Concepts in the Current Orderbook

In the global orderbook for 2025/2026, several hundred newbuilds carry some form of ready designation. In the container segment, methanol-ready dominates, driven primarily by the ordering policies of Maersk, CMA CGM and other major liner companies. In the bulk carrier and tanker segments, ammonia-ready notations are increasingly common, though the actual depth of preparation varies considerably.

Notably, the major classification societies are developing their notation systems in parallel. DNV now distinguishes between various levels of preparation, from pure design consideration through to hardware-side pre-implementation. This differentiation is helpful because it forces greater transparency on the market.

At the same time, experience shows that many ready newbuilds are never actually converted. The reasons are manifold: fuel prices develop differently than expected, regulatory frameworks shift, or the vessel’s trading route changes in a way that makes conversion economically unviable. Ready therefore always remains a bet on the future – a bet whose technical and economic parameters must be carefully evaluated.

Decision Framework: To Order Ready or Not?

The decision for or against a ready preparation should be taken within a structured framework. The following questions are central:

Route profile: Will the vessel operate on routes where the alternative fuel will realistically be available within the next 10 years? If the bunkering infrastructure is absent and no concrete expansion plans exist, ready loses its value.

Regulatory horizon: Which emission regulations are expected for the operating area by 2035? EU ETS, FuelEU Maritime and potential IMO measures can increase the economic pressure to actually convert.

Residual value consideration: How does the ready preparation affect the resale value after 10 or 15 years? This analysis requires realistic assumptions about market development, not optimistic scenarios.

Conversion cost vs. newbuild: In some cases, it may be more economical to operate a conventional vessel and later replace it with a newbuild running on the then-available fuel, rather than paying a ready premium today and undertaking an expensive conversion in ten years.
