This involves verifying whether tank space geometries, double-wall requirements and structural reinforcements for the intended fuel have already been accounted for in the basic design, or whether a subsequent conversion would be necessary. The difference between “space reserved” and “structure designed” can amount to several million euros.

At the systems level, documentation must confirm which supply lines, ventilation concepts and safety interlocks have already been installed or at least prepared in rough form. On LNG-ready vessels, for example, cryogenic piping, gas detection systems and ESD logic are frequently absent – even though the engine room is nominally “prepared.” Without an honest systems survey, any readiness designation remains a statement of intent.

The documentation level is particularly critical. Classification societies require complete baseline documents for a subsequent conversion: hazardous zone plans, HAZID reports, risk assessments in accordance with the IGF Code, and where applicable, approvals for alternative designs. If these documents are missing, the readiness designation is technically worthless because the entire approval process would have to start from scratch.

Finally, the safety level belongs in every serious breakdown. This includes escape route concepts for toxic fuels such as ammonia, personal protective equipment, detection systems and emergency procedures. A vessel can be well prepared structurally and in terms of systems yet remain unconvertible without a safety concept. Identifying precisely these discrepancies is the real value of a professional breakdown.

Practical Implications for Operators and Owners

Those who do not break down readiness designations make investment decisions based on assumptions they have not verified. In practice, this means a shipowner pays a premium for “LNG-ready” in an S&P transaction without knowing whether the actual conversion would cost 3 million or 15 million. The difference between these figures determines the economic viability of the entire remaining service life.

The same applies to charter agreements. If a charterer expects a “methanol-ready” vessel but the technical reality only encompasses a prepared tank space geometry, conflicts arise at the latest during contract review. Clean breakdowns prevent such misunderstandings and create contractual certainty.

The breakdown also has immediate relevance in fleet management. Superintendents need to know which vessels can realistically be converted within what timeframe and budget. Without this clarity, any fleet strategy becomes a gamble – particularly in a regulatory environment that shifts significantly every two to three years.
